How to be efficient in the laundry

A. Wait until you have a full load before put a wash on. Modern washing machines have a half load or energy efficient feature but it also help to minimize usage if you wait till you have a full wash.

B. Save energy. The clothes dryer is one of the most power hungry appliances in the home today. Clean out the lint trap regularly, vacuum the area below the lint trap (might have to unplug and remove panel for this). This not only saves on energy but reduces the potential for fire hazard also. When the weather is nice try hanging the clothes out to dry more often saving using the dryer all together.

C. Wash in cold or lower temperature water. You'd be surprised how frequently clothes are cleaned enough with lower temperature water. Use hotter water only for tougher stains.

D. Many articles of clothing that are labelled "Dry Clean Only" can actually be hand washed in cold temperature water using a very mild soap.

E. Keep the colour. When washing dark coloured clothing for the first time use cold water and drop in a tablespoon of salt. This will help set in the colour and help prevent running later.

F. Use plain white vinegar as a substitute for softener. Not flashy but a decent alternative.
